AI for MedTech:

This Short Advanced Programme (SAP) is integrated into the RUN-EU Students Week, hosted by  Polytechnic University of Cávado and Ave (IPCA) and jointly coordinated with the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS). During the week, students will work in international teams to address real-world challenges through innovative, practical activities. On Friday, participants are also invited to take part in the RUN-EU General Assembly, joining the wider RUN-EU community in transforming our regions together.

The medical technology (MedTech) sector is undergoing a rapid transformation driven by advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital manufacturing. Medical imaging—such as CT scans, MRI, and ultrasound—generates vast amounts of complex data that, when properly analyzed, can reveal critical insights for diagnosis, treatment planning, and personalized healthcare. However, turning these digital insights into physical medical solutions, such as patient-specific implants, prosthetics, or anatomical models, requires a multidisciplinary approach combining AI, data science, and cutting-edge manufacturing technologies like 3D printing.

This course addresses this vital intersection by training students to harness AI techniques for processing and interpreting medical images and then apply digital manufacturing methods to create real-world medical devices and tools. It equips learners with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to bridge the gap between digital data and tangible MedTech innovations, empowering them to contribute to improving patient care and advancing medical science.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this Short Advanced Programme, learners will be able to:

  • Analyse and interpret medical imaging data using AI-driven techniques;
  • Develop and implement AI algorithms for medical image segmentation;
  • Convert digital imaging data into accurate 3D anatomical models;
  • Apply digital manufacturing methods, such as 3D printing, to create patient-specific physical solutions;
  • Integrate AI and digital fabrication processes to address real-world MedTech challenges;
  • Collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams combining healthcare, engineering, and data science;
  • Evaluate the clinical relevance, technical feasibility, and ethical implications of MedTech innovations;
  • Manage project workflows and communicate results clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders;

Selection criteria

The candidates will be selected according to motivation. Priority will be given to students who are developing research at a master’s or PhD level in Engineering related fields. A minimum of 30 students will be selected for this programme.
