This Short Advanced Programme (SAP) is integrated into the RUN-EU Students Week, hosted by Polytechnic University of Cávado and Ave (IPCA) and jointly coordinated with the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS). During the week, students will work in international teams to address real-world challenges through innovative, practical activities. On Friday, participants are also invited to take part in the RUN-EU General Assembly, joining the wider RUN-EU community in transforming our regions together.
This five-day intensive design challenge invites participants to reimagine the traditional cane handle by developing ergonomic, personalized, and aesthetically distinctive solutions using 3D scanning, digital modeling, and 3D printing technologies. Grounded in inclusive and user-centered design principles, the challenge addresses the limitations of standardized mobility aids, which often neglect individual comfort, usability, and self-expression. Participants will engage in a hands-on, collaborative process that includes user research, digital design, rapid prototyping, testing, and refinement.
The main objectives are to design functional and comfortable cane handles tailored to specific user needs, integrate advanced digital fabrication tools into the design process, and transform assistive devices into objects that also reflect personal identity and style.
Throughout the challenge, participants will develop key skills such as 3D scanning, CAD modeling, and 3D printing, while gaining experience in ergonomic and inclusive design, user research, creative problem-solving, and collaborative teamwork. They will also enhance their ability to communicate and present design solutions effectively.
This program responds to current shifts in the labour market, where demand is growing for professionals skilled in digital fabrication, personalized healthcare solutions, and assistive technology innovation. It offers practical, industry-relevant experience applicable to careers in industrial design, biomedical engineering, rehabilitation technologies, and user-experience-driven product development.
